Have a Plan in Place for Finance Care Costs Later in Life

Jill Rosner, Geriatric Care Manager, Rosner Healthcare Navigation, columnist of this article from February 1, 2015 for Carroll County Times discusses the need to have a plan in place to cover custodial care with Melissa Barnickel, CPA, CLTC of Baygroup Insurance. Excerpts include:

Long Term Care Insurance Keeps Family Relationships Strong

Throughout our lives, we enjoy spending time with our families and cherish those relationships.  Sometimes, it is not happy times.  As time goes on, we may need to ask help from family members to help with meal preparation, shopping, housework, finances and personal services, such as bathing, dressing or using the bathroom.  If you were to need care today, who would that be?  If you need care in 20 years who will that be?  Will you be able to stay at home?

Life Expectancy could be a consideration in selection benefits on a LTC policy

You know how long you can expect to live, it may help you with many financial planning decisions.  Granted, this is not an absolute, but is yet another input to use.

My wife and I have an existing Long Term Care (LTC)  Insurance policies and have had it for over 11 years.  Our  Agent decided to resign leaving us high and dry. We contacted the Dept. of Aging and asked if they could suggest someone knowledgeable in LTC policy matters and they said they have had excellent results in dealing with Melissa Barnickel.  After talking with Melissa, we were very impressed with her experience in this area.  She agreed to act as our new Agent if we received approval from the the headquarters of our LTC company.  We did this and received approval to have her appointed as our  new Agent. She is now our  new Agent even though there was no compensation or commission received by her.  Melissa Barnickel has been most helpful in giving us a better understanding of our LTC policies.            J  and RB

Two Words: Expertise and Patience

Expertise and Patience -- Both are required by an insurance agent to help consumers sift through the maze of terminology and options in the world of insurance.   Thank goodness I found Melissa Barnickel!!!   Her no-pressure approach helped me immensely in navigating through that maze to find the LTC policy that best suited my needs.   That was in 2007 and her support continues to this day with my ever present questions…some of which were often repetitive, I’m sure.    Thanks, Melissa!!!

Preserve your quality of life, financial resources & positive family relationships.

We are living longer due to advances in medical science, but there is a downside. We are more likely to develop a chronic long-term condition, experience an unexpected event or require assistance with everyday activities due to illness or the frailty that naturally comes with aging.

Melissa was extraordinarily helpful in my recent decision to purchase long term care insurance. She really did a good job explaining basic concepts of long term care insurance to me and my wife. She was able to explain complex ideas in simple to understand terms. She provided both background material and specific details of coverage. She explained the options and why one choice might be better than others. My research with other companies and websites, time and again proved the value of her advice. She was extremely responsive to my questions and concerns. I never felt pressure or rushed to make a decision or purchase. Her explanations and suggestions made me comfortable with my purchase. I recommend Melissa Barnickel to you if you are interested in Long Term Care insurance. -Peter A., Middletown, Maryland

Medigap, Health and Long Term Care Insurance - Forest Hill, Harford County, Maryland

I have known Melissa Barnickel for ten years and early on saw the depth of her knowledge on Long Term Care Insurance. This set her apart from others who I met that handled insurance including long term care insurance. When I introduced her to my husband, he was very impressed, particularly important since he was not immediately enthusiastic about this decision. We now know that it was an excellent move for our financial well-being. Our attorney and financial advisor both know her and have the same high regard for Melissa.

Last year when we retired, we had read much about health insurance and supplemental insurance. She spent a great deal of time going through it with both of us, providing all the options for us to make the right decisions. Retiring was wonderful, however, there were so many unanswered questions and financial concerns that arose. She was of great help to us both. I would recommend her to anyone and know others who would do the same.   -  Mr. & Mrs. T. R.

Why do I need to look at Long Term Care Insurance now?

Starting mid-April, 2013, pricing will be much higher, especially for women.  Roll-out of changes vary by state of residence and insurance company.  Your family health history as well as your health history will be evaluated more thoroughly than it is with current policies.  This change will affect some people who are currently easily insurable. The high cost of care today and tomorrow, increasing longevity, increasing probability of requiring care, and the severe impact on family lifestyle and finances makes long term care a front burner issue.

My wife and I were very impressed with Melissa Barnickel when, in 2010, we decided to survey the long term care market. After asking us several questions, she sent us information to review as well as a number of proposals to consider from companies that she felt were leaders in the industry. One example of a study that she supplied stands out to us—it was the average facility costs to be a resident in the geographic areas that interested us.
The premium quotes for the coverage available, along with applicable discounts when both spouses are insured, combined with the costs of facilities provided a complete picture so that we could intelligently make a decision on our next step---the application for a policy with designated personal preferences. Melissa simplified that process for us as well by answering questions and electronically sending us everything we needed.
Her terrific follow up and patience was exemplary. We have recommended Melissa to friends and family without hesitation. - Mr. & Mrs. B.P.
